Ke$lor, why no. I did not make a typo

Source
Ke$ha-hip, trendy, lots of beat, may-or-may-not be a cannibal...she also has that dollar sign thing going on. $Ca-Ching!$

(Really wishing right now I had an s in my name...what do ya think? Be%hany? B^thany? I'm really pulling for B3t@n%? No way anyone would forget about me then, right?)

Taylor Swift-country-ish, funny, America's sweetheart...she also has that do me wrong and you'll regret it thing going on...rawr!

Not a lot in common, right?
WRONG!
They both have a song out now that has a similar theme, sound, and uses the exact same symbol. OMG, hold the calls and press the PANIC button!

What does this have to do with us writers?
How many times have you panicked? Worried that someone else has your idea? I know I have. Here's the thing. It. Happens. That doesn't make yours obsolete. It doesn't make yours worthless. It means yours can rock alongside and maybe share some groupies. Originality is key. You can have a lot of similar elements and still have your own song. Check out the similar elements and then listen to Ke$ha's and Taylor's below and see for yourself.

Taylor's Lyrics                                                  Ke$ha's Lyrics
So here I am in my new apartment                                                         I see your face in strangers on the street.
In a big city, they just dropped me off                                                   I still say your name when I'm talking in my sleep.
It's so much colder than I thought it would be                                        And in the limelight, I play it all fine.
So I tuck myself in and turn my night light on                                         But I can't handle it when I turn off my night light.

Theme: Regret, Growing up                              Theme: Regret, Heart break
Sound: Soft, Lullaby                                          Sound: Soft, some heavier beats
Symbol: Nightlight                                             Symbol: Nightlight

Taylor's song: Never Grow Up                                                  Ke$ha's song: The Harold Song

So, what do you think? Anyone win this duel or is it a tie? Anything else to add?

Taylor swift actually has lyrics so I'd count that as a plus...
When I was a lad I was a fan of Maria McKee but back then everything was still in black and white and people had funny hair.

I looked at it wrong and see both songs have lyrics and now I get your point. Please understand I've driven in circles for most of my life...
I suspect the Pop songwriting community is a small community. So perhaps the lesson is that your influences shape your creative process. So, if you have just read Harry Potter it would be very hard to not have a Harry Potter influence in your writing which turns into a problem when everyone else has also been reading Harry Potter. So it might be better to read something like, T.H. White, a Once and Future King, or LaMorte de Athur (spelling is wrong I'm sure) as I suppose everything in the fantasy world comes from there.
Perhaps I should just go to work...

That's happened so many times to so many people. You got this great idea, see it somewhere else and the world is ending. Fact is, it's probably impossible to think up of a 100% original idea. What makes a story good isn't how original it is but how well the story is told. However, I still am not forgiving to the vampire novel culture that sprung up after Twilight. Bleh.

Buy the way, nice post.
